It’s
a new year and AM Radio is back with a new sound, a new
vibe and a new lineup. Rehearsing weekly at their Los
Feliz hills mansion (courtesy of Kevin’s day job) the
guys have really let their hair down and just let the
music flow. No rules, no inhibitions, no regard for the
state of modern rock radio. The band name itself being a
backlash at all things FM.
Over the past few years, AM Radio has garnered a
reputation for being ‘on again, off again’ with their
many breakups, hiatuses and lineup changes. More
recently being ‘on again’ for the release of their 2007
album “Reactive” in Japan, on Fiveman Army (FAEC Inc.).
“Reactive”, a collection of feature songs and outtakes
from their 2003 release “Radioactive”, also includes
2004 recording sessions with producers Todd Sullivan (Weezer),
Rich Mouser and Geza X (Dead Kennedy’s, Black Flag).
The band was originally formed in Los Angeles in late
2001, with a big helping hand from Weezer front man
Rivers Cuomo. Acting as both manager and guardian angel,
Rivers released AM Radio’s self titled debut album on
his own record label, Blue Records; and then took them
out on tour with Weezer for their big 2002 summer tours,
in both North America and Japan.
After selling a few thousand copies of their ‘indie’
album and building serious road credibility with Weezer,
Third Eye Blind, Eve 6, Rooney, Ben Kweller and the
Psychedelic Furs, AM Radio signed with Elektra Records.
Their second studio album, "Radioactive", produced by
Howard Benson (Hoobastank, P.O.D., My Chemical Romance),
captures their unique technical talents and infectious
live energy. Full of hook-laden hits that have been
playing on radio stations and television soundtracks,
"Radioactive" is a bright, spunky blend of British new
wave pop, righteous, anthem-like rock n' roll guitar
riffs, and catchy, well-crafted melodies.
Learning to play their instruments to 80’s new wave,
classic rock and heavy metal, these Connecticut
transplants and one true blue Californian are rooted
deep in top notch musicianship and chorus oriented
songwriting. Front man Kevin Ridel created a name for
himself in the LA music scene, in the 90’s, with his
bands Ridel High (A&M Records) and Peel (Beyond Music).
Soulful, charismatic guitarist Jason Moore, in addition
to AM Radio, toured non-stop with the band Shurman
(Vanguard Records) in 2005; and more recently appeared
on the TV show Next Great American Band with the band
The Likes Of You. The ultimate, time tested rhythm
section, bass player Guy Harrington and drummer Adam
Hurlbut, have played together for more than 15 years in
their previous band World Without Sundays. Adam, a
session caliber drummer, also spent some time in the
early 90’s sitting in with guitar heroes Greg Howe,
Ritchie Kotzen, Andy Timmons, Rik Emmet and Blues
Saraceno.
AM Radio’s newest recording, a 5 song EP entitled “Push
Play”, is due out soon on PPBaba Music. Stay tuned! |
